When creating the perfect pie, you should be prepared to give your neighborhood pizza shop a run for its money.
The proliferation of specialty pies has wreaked havoc on the pizza industry. When you move from simple pizzas to the elaborate concoctions that pizza executives dream up, you will notice that the amount of calories, fat, and sodium in the pizza increases dramatically. This can be seen in any nutritional guide the major pizza suppliers provided. (Are pepperoni, sausage, bacon, and ground beef necessary toppings for your pie?)
When it comes to wacky pizzas, however, we’ve always had a thing for the Hawaiian. This isn’t just because it strikes the perfect yin-yang balance between sweet and smoky flavors; it’s also one of the healthiest pizzas you can eat. Of course, it’s possible that it’s not Italian, but you can be sure that it’s truly American.
You’ll Need
- a single packet of instant yeast
- 1 measure of boiling water
- 1⁄2 tsp salt
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1⁄2 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 and a half cups of flour, plus additional flour for kneading and rolling the dough (or 2 thin-crust store-bought pizza shells)
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 cup diced fresh mozzarella (or 1 cup shredded low-moisture mozzarella)
- 1 cup of pineapple that has been chopped.
- 4 slices of smoked ham (such as Black Forest), chunked up.
- 1 red onion, sliced very thinly (small), one
- 1 jalapeno pepper, sliced as thinly as possible
How to Make It
- Mix the yeast with the water, then add the salt and honey to the mixture.
- Allow sitting undisturbed for ten minutes while the hot water activates the yeast.
- Next, mix the flour and olive oil using a wooden spoon to thoroughly combine the ingredients.
- After the dough has lost its stickiness, place it on a cutting board, dust it with additional flour, and knead it for five minutes.
- Place the dough back in the bowl, cover it with a piece of plastic wrap, and allow it to rest and rise at room temperature for at least an hour and a half.
- Turn the oven temperature up to 500 degrees F. If you have access to a pizza stone, you should position it on the lowest possible rack in the oven.
- On a surface dusted with flour, stretch the dough into two circles measuring 12 inches in diameter.
- When preparing one pizza at a time, place the pizza shell on a baking sheet, spread a thin layer of tomato sauce over the surface, and then layer the pizza with half of the cheese, pineapple, ham, onion, and jalapenos. Bake the pizza for 10 minutes (If using a pizza stone, do this on a floured pizza peel, then slide the pizza onto the stone for baking.)
- After the first pizza has been baked for about 8 minutes, the cheese should be melted and bubbling, and the crust should have browned, repeat the process with the second pizza.
- Each pie should be cut into six equal slices.
